Dimethyl Fumarate
What is it?
Dimethyl fumarate is used to prevent mold on furniture and shoes. Furniture or shoes can be treated directly with dimethyl fumarate or they can be packaged with pouches containing dimethyl fumarate. Over time, the dimethyl fumarate in the pouches will leach into the furniture leather or shoes.
Dimethyl fumarate is also used as a medication to treat psoriasis and multiple sclerosis.
How can I avoid it?
Skin contact with dimethyl fumarate is required for it to cause a rash. Discontinuation of products containing dimethyl fumarate should result in improvement and/or resolution of your dermatitis. If furniture or shoes have been treated or packaged with dimethyl fumarate, it is able to penetrate through clothing to affect the skin.
