What is it?
Benzophenone is a ultraviolet (UV) absorber. It is commonly used as an active ingredient in sunscreens marketed in the United States. It is used similarly in non-sunscreen cosmetic products like moisturizers and agents advertised for anti-aging effects. It is also contained in dental composite materials and other plastic materials.
How can I avoid it?
You should avoid contact with this substance. Avoidance requires reading labels, package inserts, and on occasion, direct communication with the manufacturer. You may be allergic or photoallergic to Benzophenone. If photoallergic, you may only develop a rash when exposed to light such as going out in the sun. You should avoid all sunscreens and cosmetics with the name ‘benzophenone’ in the ingredient list as many persons are also allergic to these (sulisobenzone and benzophenone are particular ones to avoid). You should avoid the following oral drugs which contain benzophenones: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAID’s) ketoprofen and tiaprofenic acid, and the cholesterol-lowering agent fenofibrate, all of which contain a benzophenone.
